1/12/08 - Allen AME Church, Edisto Island, SC
It’s always “nice” to investigate in the middle of a scary place… especially when there is a REAL danger of alligators, snakes, psycho killers, and other various swamp monsters! Although we didn’t get any visual evidence or EVPs, we got a definite unexplainable sound… the sound of knocking on a tombstone right in front of us. We both heard it… and so did our recording devices!
This weekend, we tried out the new digital recorder at Edisto Island, SC. There are a LOT of old churches there with centuries-old graves, so we went EVP hunting.
Well, we didn’t get any strong EVP’s, but we something weird DID happen that we caught on the recording… First of all, let me paint the picture of where we were…

We were at a church graveyard at night in the middle of NOWHERE. As you can see, it’s on a bluff in the marsh, surrounded by nothing. Yeah, and all sorts of snakes, alligators, and other monsters were probably close by. ...And, to further paint the picture of the wilderness around us, Botany Bay Road is where the jungle scenes of “Ace Ventura II: When Nature Calls” was filmed! If you saw the movie, that road is the road where Jim Carey was driving crazy, singing “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”! lol… so the trees are like a jungle!
We got about 16 minutes of audio, and this happened somewhere around minute 13 or so, so it was pretty close to the end. I’ve included the audio, but here is the background:
We were at the grave of Ezekiel White, and first I said “Mr. Moldy”, because that tombstone was severely covered in mold. Then I said “Did you here that?”, but that was a false alarm… I think I scraped my jacket’s collar somehow by my ear (maybe with my visor’s velcro), so that was clearly nothing… and I was a little ashamed of myself! lol…
Well, then Katie reads off the name on the tombstone ("Ezekiel White"), and I say “South Carolina...” and then all of a sudden, we heard THREE KNOCKS that came right from the tombstone. The thing is, the knocks sounded like they were on wood, and they were from right in front of us (we were a foot away from the tombstone) and there was NOTHING like that around there that could have made that sound. NOTHING!
We were both speechless after it happened, and I thought maybe the ground could have been settling… but that doesn’t make any sense either, being that I’ve never ever heard anything like that ever in my life… and I’ve walked over lots of ground before! Lol… PLUS, we would have *felt* the ground settling… not *HEARD* the ground settling.
Beats me!!! We were freaking SHOCKED after it happened! The tombstone was solid marble, and when I knocked on it, it didn’t make a sound because it was so solid. Plus, we checked the ground around it, and there wasn’t anything that could have made that noise. In fact, there wasn’t anything that could have made that noise anywhere close to us, much less one foot in front of us!
Here is the clip, and I turned up the knocking part because it’s hard to hear on standard laptop speakers without headphones (and it actually sounds like 5 knocks on the recording)… but know this, it was loud enough for my recorder to pick up!
You still will need to turn up the volume to hear it (and you’ll need to play it more than once)…

These are the several knocking sounds we heard on the tombstone of Ezekial White in response to our questioning! I turned up the audio on the section with the knocks. As usual, headphones are required…
John: "Mr. Moldy. Whoa... did you hear that? No?"
Katie: [responds negatively and says something about breaking a twig a second ago] "Ezekiel White?"
John: "South Carolina..."
[SEVERAL KNOCKING SOUNDS EMINATE FROM THE TOMBSTONE]
John: "Did you hear that."
Katie: "Uh huh!"
John: "What was that?"
Katie: "No Idea."
John: "It sounded like it came from the tombstone. I mean, that's what... it sounded like a bump bump bump. Did you hear that?"
You should have seen the wide-eyed looks on our faces in the few seconds of silence after the knocks, before I said “Did you hear THAT?!” I know it’s impossible to hear that and be freaked when you weren’t there with us to see that only a marble tombstone and solid ground were around, and it was dead quiet in the graveyard other than crickets! Lol… This is not any sort of conclusive evidence, but we are filing it under “unexplained.”
-John
PS- In our shock, we didn’t take a picture of the tombstone. We will be back, though… and I’ll insert it here when I get a picture.
