Old City Cemetery - Jacksonville, FL
Located at the corner of East Union Street and Cemetery Street, this is one of Jacksonville’s most historic sites in the downtown area. It was established in 1852, and contains over 500 graves, including over 60 confederate soldiers in one designated area, which included some that fought in Lee’s batallion.
Downtown is only a short distance away. However, the cemetery area has been cut off from the rest of downtown by the elevated expressway ramps that connect State & Union St. drivers to the Matthews Bridge.
Famous individuals buried here include:
John Freeman Young, a priest who was the translator of the song “Silent Night, Holy Night”
Francis Philip Fleming - A confederate soldier and lawyer who became the 15th governor of Florida from 1889 to 1893
Princess Laura Adorkor “Mother Kofi” - A Ghana native and founder of “The African Universal Church and Commercial League” who was assassinated on the pulpit in 1928.
John Finegan - Civil War Confederate Brigadier General in the command of the defense of Florida from Union troops at Olustee.
Unfortunately, this cemetery is in a pretty rough area -I wouldn’t even think about coming here at night- and it’s near a busy road and a playground (populated by the homeless and crack heads) so audio evidence would be very hard to get. Also, as indicitive of a larger cultural problem that Jacksonville faces, this cemetery is not only neighbored by a sketchy population, but the cemetery itself has been neglected and fallen into a bit of disrepair.
This would probably be considered a “miss” as far as great investigation areas would go.
